What to Expect In Singing Lessons
Singing lessons are tailored to help you improve your vocal skills, but what actually happens during a lesson?
Variety in Teaching Styles
There are several different approaches to teaching singing, chosen based on the individual and the specific technique.
-
Song-Based Learning: Some techniques are better taught through simply repeating lines or methods from a specific song.
-
Technique Warm-Ups: Others require starting with a vocal exercise designed to teach specific techniques, then apply those techniques to a song.
-
Anatomy and Science: Finally with some methods of singing it is necessary to delve into the anatomy of singing, using scientific principles to help you gain vocal control, often saving song practice for the end of the lesson or even another lesson entirely.
Finding the Right Teacher
There are as many teaching styles as there are voice teachers. It’s important to find a teacher who teaches how you learn. If you feel you're not progressing, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad singer; it just means you haven’t found the right match yet. We here at Milwaukee Singing Lessons LLC highly encourage our students to take trial lessons with multiple teachers and stick with the one who you learn the best from.

Our Approach
Here’s how our lessons typically unfold:

-
Warm-Up: We almost always start with warm-ups. These are meant to get your voice ready to succeed like stretching before a run, but some students prefer to do these in the car on the way to lessons in which case we can skip them.
-
Technique Development: We focus on new or revisited techniques, beginning with explanations and exercises using vowels and simple words or phrases.
-
Song Practice: We then apply these techniques to a song or depending on the complexity a scale or single line from a song. The goal is to ensure that you understand each step of the process and can repeat the method at home.

Personalized Support

-
Accompaniment: If you’re not comfortable singing alone, your teacher will sing with you. We can also play guitar, piano, or pull up karaoke tracks for any song.
-
Pitch Matching: We have strategies to help if you struggle with matching pitch.
-
Song Selection: If you don’t have a song in mind, we’ll choose one for you. If you have a specific song, we will gladly work on that with you.
Encouragement and Growth
Don't be afraid to sound bad. If we don't get to hear the mistakes we have nothing to work on. Just like you don't hide sickness from the doctor, don't hide mistakes from your teacher, its what were here for after all. A good voice teacher is there to support you without judgment. Questions and feedback are always welcome. We’re here to ensure you’re happy with your voice and confident in your singing abilities.
